Basic stances and forms

Note: Due to organisational and regional variations, the instructions for the forms on the following pages are merely a guideline.

Stances

  • Ready stance
  • Front stance
  • Back stance
  • Low back stance
  • Horse-riding stance
  • Side stance 
  • Duck foot stance

Basic form 1

  1. Starting from the ready stance, look towards your left.
  2. Turn your body 90 degrees to your left and perform a low block in front stance.
  3. Take 1 step forwards and perform a centre punch in front stance.
  4. Look over your right shoulder. 
  5. Turn your body 180 degrees and perform a low block in front stance.
  6. Take 1 step forwards and perform a centre punch in front stance.
  7. Look over your left shoulder, towards the front of the training hall.
  8. Turn your body 90 degrees to your left and perform a low block in front stance.
  9. Take 1 forwards and perform a centre punch in front stance (x3), making sure to shout when completing the final punch. 
  10. Look over your left shoulder .
  11. Turn your body 270 degrees and perform a low block in front stance.
  12. Repeat steps 3-5.
  13. Return to the ready stance.

Basic form 2

  1. Starting for the ready stance, look over your left shoulder.
  2. Turn your body 90 degrees and perform a low block in front stance.
  3. Take 1 step forwards and perform a high punch in front stance.
  4. Look over your right shoulder.
  5. Turn your body 180 degrees and perform a low block in front stance.
  6. Repeat step 3.
  7. Look over  your left shoulder, towards the front of the training hall. 
  8. Repeat step 2.
  9. Take 1 step forwards and perform a high block in front stance (x3), making to shout when completing the final block.
  10. Look over your left shoulder.
  11. Turn your body 270 degrees and perform a low block in front stance.
  12. Repeat steps 3-5.
  13. Return to the ready stance. 

Basic form 3

  1. Starting from the ready stance, look over your left shoulder.
  2. Remaining in your current position in the training hall, transfer your weight into a back stance and a perform an inside-to-outside block.
  3. Take 1 step forwards and perform a centre punch in front stance.
  4. Look over your right shoulder.
  5. Turn your body 90 degrees and perform an inside-to-outside block in back stance. 
  6. Take 1 step forwards and perform a centre punch in front stance.
  7. Look over your left shoulder, towards the front of the training hall.
  8. Turn your body 90 degrees and perform a low block in front stance.
  9. Take 1 step forwards and perform a side centre punch in horse-riding stance (x3), making sure to shout while performing the final punch.
  10. Look over your left shoulder.
  11. Turn your body 90 degrees and repeat steps 2-9.
  12. Look over your left shoulder.
  13. Repeat steps 2-6.
  14. Return to the ready stance.
